'The Rice Show' - Estimation

  Description/Aim

The exhibition 'Of All The People in All the World' From Stans Cafe is a very powerful yet simple demostration of how numbers and relativity can be used to help us understand the World we live in. Watch the videos linked from this page and find out for yourself! In this activity you are going to recreate some exhibits using the same idea. You never new a pile of rice could be so interesting and so revealing

Time - 1+ hrs (depending on how cmuch time you have)

Age - 8+

Digital worksheet - word document

Teachers Notes - Why? How? What?

Why we like this activity....

You have to do it yourself to see! I was so absorbed by this the first time I saw it that I felt sure that students could
be too! Using visual representations of numbers lends a power and reality to them. The estimation exercise is
excellent and essential. Choosing the numbers to represent can be a wonderfully cross curricular activity.

How this activity can be used....

Being very practical, a certain amount of kit (including rice) and preparation is required. You need to judge the group
you are with. Some groups of 4, some pairs, some individuals, depending on how many sets of scales you can
acquire.

What to expect when using this activity, from our experience...

I was reminded about the extra preparation and skills required from my colleagues in the ARt, Science and DT
departments for practical activities! Once this is sorted, the activity runs itself.
