Body Surface Area

  Description/Aim

This is a great practical investigation with real life applications. It encourages students to think
critically about area. Working in small groups students are asked to find an approximation for the
surface area of their bodies. Which 3D shapes will best approximate the shapes of the different
parts of the body? The formulae required are not included, but students are expected to find
them for themselves.

At the end there is an interesting formula that estimates their body surface area from their mass
and height.

Teachers Notes - Why? How? What?

Why we like this activity....
Students really enjoy practical activities in mathematics. They are required to use their problem solving skills- recognising the
shapes and finding and applying the correct formula. How can you calculate the surface area of your head? What dimensions do
you need? How can you calculate the radius?

How this activity can be used....
Students will need tape measures - the paper ones that you can pick up from Ikea are ideal!

What to expect when using this activity, from our experience...
An interesting application that one of my students suggested for calculating BSA was in a tanning salon!
