Quadratic Properties

  Description/Aim

There are hundreds of ways to look at the properties of quadratic functions. In this activity, the focus is on symmetry - a property that is appealing to the eye. You will be asked to plot a series of quadrtic functions and study the symmetrical properties. The ultimate aim here is to be able to generalise about those properties!

Time - 1-2 hrs

Age - 15+

Digital worksheet - word document

Teachers Notes - Why? How? What?

Why we like this activity....

This activity really takes advantage of the technology you use! Graph plotters save time and allow you to explore the
patterns. Also, the patterns that can be made with different graphs are really quite appealing!

How this activity can be used....

This is one for individuals and it really should be done with computers or graphical calculators.

What to expect when using this activity, from our experience...

You'll have to think hard to link the algebra with the pictures and the symmetrical properties. Once you have bridged
this gap you'll do well

Extra notes

Th is activity follows on well from quadratic links
