I GCSE IB Algebra Studies functions Solve Quadratics 14+ Tag

Description/Aim

Matching key features of quadratic functions with their graphs! Students are given 6 graphs and 4 key bits of information to go with them and they just need to match them together.

There after the activity repeats but each time students are given less and less information! They are required ultimately to deduce all the info from just the unfactorised quadratic equation.

Teachers Notes - Why? How? What?

Why we like this activity ….

Its puzzle nature draws students in and imediately gets them reasoning and sharing that reasoning with
each other! This reasoning is the only thing required to undersatnd this topic and the context is
kinaesthetic and engaging

How this activity be used ….

This could be done on computers, with paper and scissors or with laminated re-usable sets. I tend to go
with paper and scissors. Students working in pairs.

What to expect when using this activity – from our experience

Lots of reasoning! Confusion over where and when x=0. From my experience students can find it
counter intuitive that x=0 all along the y-axis and vice-versa.
